She Can Keep the Scars
They didn’t know that paperwork was the reason I was going to destroy them.
When Julian finally called an ambulance, he told them I’d spilled the oil on myself. Eleanor wiped the pan, changed her blouse, and rehearsed her story before the paramedics arrived.
At the hospital, a surgeon said the burns would scar my neck, shoulder, and chest. Julian hovered near the door, pretending to be devastated. The moment the nurse stepped out, he leaned close.
“Sign the property transfer, and I’ll make sure you get the best treatment.”
I turned my bandaged face toward him. “No.”
His eyes hardened. “You’re finished, Clara.”
He left the divorce papers beside my bed the next morning. But he missed the tiny red light on my handbag.
Three years earlier, after Julian forged my signature on a loan application and called it a misunderstanding, I’d started carrying a voice-activated recorder.
It had captured Eleanor’s threat, Julian’s laughter, and every word spoken beside my hospital bed. It had also captured something worse. Before pouring the oil, Eleanor had shouted, “After everything we did to make those inspectors approve his buildings, you still won’t save us?”
Beneath the white bandages, I pressed the call button. When the nurse came in, I asked for the police. Then I called the family lawyer Julian had always dismissed as a useless old man.
“Mr. Vance,” I said through cracked lips, “activate the trust protections. Freeze everything.”
His voice turned to steel. “Consider it done.”
