She Has Been Dead For 45,000 Years. In 2026, Three Different Scientists Gave Her Three Different Faces — And Each One Revealed Something The Others Missed
No amount of improvement in CT scanning, genomic sequencing, or computational methods will produce a photograph of Zlatý kůň.
The knowledge gap is permanent.
What can be done — and what the Velemínská study exemplifies — is to characterize the uncertainty as precisely as possible.
By comparing multiple methods and quantifying the differences between their results, the study establishes the range of plausible faces that the evidence is consistent with.
It shows which features are most robustly constrained by the evidence (and therefore most likely to reflect the actual person) and which are most sensitive to methodological choices (and therefore most uncertain).
This characterization of uncertainty is itself a form of knowledge.
