The Question of What She Looked Like

For most of the seventy-plus years since Zlatý kůň’s skull was found, the question of what she actually looked like was unanswerable in any concrete sense.

The skull had been studied anatomically.

Researchers had documented its morphology, noted its characteristics, placed it within the broader range of Upper Paleolithic human skull variation.

But the face that had once covered those bones was entirely unknown.

Ancient DNA analysis changed that, too — not by directly determining her appearance, but by unlocking genetic information about pigmentation traits that can be inferred from specific genetic variants with reasonably high confidence.
