How were these early groups related to each other?

Did they interbreed?

Did they maintain distinct populations, or was gene flow between groups substantial?

These questions are currently being investigated with the tools of population genomics, but the sparse sampling of early Upper Paleolithic individuals means that many uncertainties remain.

It is worth returning, after all the science and methodology, to what all of this is actually about: a person who lived 45,000 years ago, who had a face, and whose face scientists have tried to recover.

She was real.
