It was not quite a question.

“I’ve kept all of them,” I said.

And I understood, watching her photograph the screen, that the woman who had been too worn down to leave had also, somehow, in some stubborn surviving corner of herself, been quietly gathering the proof that would one day let her — a woman who had felt powerless for two years, saving, without knowing it, exactly what she would need on the night she finally stopped being.
