She Planned It for Nine Months
All of it — my parents, the news, the years of being made to feel worthless — went quiet. We sat together, the three of us, safe. The fight was finished.
And resting my head on Alistair’s shoulder, I understood that it was also a beginning.
The Long After
Over the next six months, the Pembroke name came apart in public. People stopped treating my parents as anyone of consequence; the family surfaced now only in the court pages, as defendants.
Alistair’s lawyers moved quickly with the bank records I’d preserved. Against that much hard evidence — the diverted funds, the forged documents — Raymond had no defense.
Rather than risk a trial that could have cost him twenty years, he broke down in front of the judge and accepted an eight-year sentence.
With the money Raymond had been siphoning to prop up their lifestyle gone, Reginald and Barbara fell fast. When Alistair called the sixty-million-dollar loan, as he’d said he would, the bankruptcy moved almost as quickly.
