Lily Brennan was nineteen years old and driving north on Highway 99 with a bag of groceries in the footwell when she saw herself on a billboard.

She had been listening to a podcast about deep-sea creatures. She was thinking about whether the milk would be all right in the car for another twenty minutes.

It was 4:20 in the afternoon on a Tuesday in March, and the light was doing the thing Seattle light does in March, coming in low and gray-gold under the cloud layer.

The billboard was on the east side of the highway, above a tire shop.
