She Wants to See You
Lily leaned against the counter.
“I’ve been thinking about it since the billboard,” Daniel said. “It’s not kindness. I thought it was kindness for about thirty years. It’s a way of getting the room to stop being uncomfortable, and I’m the one who does it, and the cost of it is that nobody ever has to look at what they did — including me.”
“Dad—”
“I took your picture, Lily.”
She went quiet.
“I lifted my phone over you and I took a photograph of your face and I sent it to eleven people because I wanted them to come.” His hands were on the edge of the sink.
