Chapter 16 — I’m Home

For a while I was a small legend I didn’t recognize — the mystery passenger in seat 8A who saved Flight 412, retold and reshaped until the woman in the story was someone braver and colder than I ever was.

I let people have their version.

I never thought of myself as a hero.

I had done what any pilot is trained to do, which is step forward at the exact moment stepping back stops being an option, and I happened to be the one with the training when the moment came.

That’s not heroism.
