My staying out of the seat wasn’t protecting anyone.

It was only protecting me — from ever again feeling what I’d felt watching Gabriel go down.

I had dressed up my own fear as everyone else’s safety and called it a vow.

And a vow like that isn’t worth the lives of the people on this airplane.

Nothing is.

I took a breath.
