I have replayed that choice more times than I can count, and what unsettles me most about it is how small it was.

It was not a dramatic decision.

I did not weigh my life against a few hours of daylight in some grand way.

I was tired, and I was close to home, and turning around felt like a defeat, and someone else’s tires had made it, and so I nudged the wheel toward the tracks the way you make a hundred tiny thoughtless choices every day.

That is the thing about the decisions that nearly end us: they almost never announce themselves.
