Sixteen Years I Didn’t Speak to My Mother. Then I Went Missing, and From Her Sickbed She Said “Go Find Her”
Now I know.
It feels like the most important sound in the world.
I do not remember much of what Henry said to me down in that hollow — nothing important, the weather, the drive out, whether I had a name for the baby.
What I remember is the tone of it, the deliberate unhurried calm of a man who had decided he was not going to let me be alone or afraid in what might be my last hour.
I have tried, since, to find him and thank him properly, and I never have managed to say it the way I mean it.
