When I stepped out of that office in my tailored suit with my composed face, I was not performing a role.
I was reintroducing myself, to Julian and to myself, to the woman we had both allowed to disappear.
And the greatest gift of that whole terrible, clarifying week was not the rebalanced marriage, real as that was.
It was the recovery of myself.
Motherhood had not erased me.
It had only, for a while, made me forget where I had put myself.
And I found her again, in a suit, with a folder, on the far side of the worst thing my husband ever said to me.
