Someone Had to Stay
“I’m going to make a quick phone call,” Liam announced, pulling his phone back out of his pocket and already turning away.
“To who?” I asked, looking up at him, honestly confused.
It was two in the morning.
Who does a person call at two in the morning from an emergency room, if not to share bad news or ask for help getting through the night?
I assumed, even then, it would be something on my side, something toward us.
He did not answer me.
He just walked away, toward the exit doors, phone already at his ear, and stepped outside into the dark to make his call where I could not hear it.
