“That is not better.”

“It is mathematically better.”

Despite herself, Chloe almost laughed. Leo saw it. The corner of his mouth moved, barely. Then his expression hardened again. “You can hate me from a protected house just as easily as you can hate me from a hotel.”

“I don’t hate you.” The words escaped before she could stop them. Silence filled the office. Leo looked at her as if she’d just placed a loaded weapon between them.

“That,” he said quietly, “may be the most dangerous thing you’ve told me.”
