It asks them to see what cooperation cost, why it happened, and how unstable it was.

It does not deny that Tisquantum helped the settlers.

It explains the extraordinary chain of events that made him able to help them.

It does not turn him into a perfect hero.

It allows him to be ambitious, strategic, and flawed.

And it does not end Native history with him.

Wampanoag people survived the epidemic, colonial expansion, warfare, dispossession, and centuries of attempts to define them from the outside.
