In 1620, the Mayflower carried more than one hundred passengers across the Atlantic.

Popular memory often calls all of them Pilgrims, but the group was more varied.

Some were religious Separatists.

Others were servants, workers, sailors, and settlers with different motives.

They did not arrive in an empty wilderness.

They first encountered Native lands on Cape Cod and eventually crossed the bay to the site of Patuxet.

The epidemic had left the place largely empty.
