Correcting the story does not diminish Tisquantum’s contribution.

It places that contribution back inside the collective knowledge of Wampanoag people.

He could teach because he came from a community that already knew how to live in that place.

The knowledge did not begin when he explained it to English settlers.

The Meaning Of The Empty Village

The strongest moment in Tisquantum’s story may not be his first meeting with the Pilgrims or the 1621 harvest gathering.

It may be his return to Patuxet in 1619.

The reason is simple.

Everything after it can be understood as a response to that loss.

If Patuxet had survived, Tisquantum might have returned to family, kin, and an established political community.
