Cassandra’s voice softened. “You can come inside. Luke left a cookie for you.”

“For Santa?”

“No. He said Santa already has enough.”

Damon followed her into the house. On the coffee table sat one broken sugar cookie beneath a paper napkin, with a note in Cassandra’s handwriting saying Luke wanted Damon to have the larger half.

Damon ate it quietly.
