“He told me you’d gone into a facility.” She said it without any inflection at all. “He said you were unconscious and there was nothing left to do and he needed to not be in Georgia.

He booked it that night. I thought I was taking a grieving man to the ocean.”

“Emma.”

“Don’t.” She held up a hand. “I’m not asking for that. I took a hundred and eighty thousand dollars of your money over eighteen months and I knew by the end that something was extremely wrong and I kept taking it, and the twelve thousand I gave back was what was left, not what was right.

“I’m telling you about Boston because you drove here, and because you’re the only other person on earth who knows the whole shape of it, and because I have never once been able to explain to anybody why I stayed without sounding like I’m making an excuse.”
