He did two things. The first was open-source and boring — social media geolocation, an aggregation service, a resort’s public review pages cross-referenced against a timestamp.
That part was fine and he’d do it in front of a judge.
The second was a phone call to a man he knew at a data broker, in which he obtained credit card transaction records for a third party without authorization, on a Tuesday night, at two in the morning, because his friend from college had called him with a voice he had never heard her use.
“That’s a federal thing,” he said. “It’s not a grey area and it’s not a hard question. If it had come out I’d have lost the certifications, and the certifications are the business, and the business is the house and Naomi’s practice and eleven people’s jobs.”
“It went into a court filing.”
“Some of it did.” Harrison rubbed his face. “That’s the other half. Gavin used the open-source material in the filing. He never used the broker records, and I’ve always assumed he worked out where they came from and made a decision, because he’s not stupid.
