Antonia read the emergency resolution aloud, her voice carrying to every corner of that silent room: Rupert’s appointment withdrawn, effective immediately; his employment terminated for cause; all evidence referred to federal prosecutors for criminal investigation.

“All in favor?” my father asked.

Every director raised a hand.

Not one hesitated.

I had known the count going in — I always knew the count — but there is a difference between knowing a thing and watching it happen, watching a room full of people who had laughed at me twenty minutes earlier raise their hands in unison to end the man they’d been applauding.

It is a strange thing to watch power move in a room in real time.

An hour before, all of it had pointed at Rupert.

Every calculation in that ballroom — who to flatter, who to laugh with, whose joke to echo — had been organized around the certainty that he was ascending and would soon control the fates of everyone present.
