I climbed the carpeted stairs to my apartment on Elm Street at two o’clock and found Paige standing outside my door.

A bright yellow notice from Mrs.

Gable, our landlady, was taped right across the deadbolt keyhole.

Paige crossed her arms and tapped her right foot on the hallway floor.

“He went to Mrs.

Gable’s office at noon,” Paige said before I could even get my keys out.

I pulled the yellow notice off the door frame and read the bold lines at the top.

“Seth signed a single-party lease termination,” I said, reading it out loud to Paige.
