“He was charging my wife an extra two thousand four hundred dollars a year just to make up for what his forty-five-dollar overtime didn’t cover?” Colin asked.

“Yes,” I said.

“He told each of us a completely different story so neither of us would ever look at the actual signed paperwork.”

Heather looked up from the papers, her eyes locking on mine with a sudden, quiet intensity.

“He took twelve thousand dollars of your hard-earned money and made me believe you were begging to quit your job to watch my kids,” Heather said.
