Evelyn’s position, which she gave me in one go and has never restated because she has not needed to, was:

“They have a name.

They have had it since they were four pounds.

It is on everything they own and it is the name their teacher says at nine in the morning.

“You have been in their life for four months.

“You do not get to take a name off a five-year-old in month four because a woman in Palm Beach made you feel small.”

What we did in the end was not a compromise in the sense of both of us giving something up.
