All nine with the same green sticker across the front: RETURN TO SENDER — NOT AT THIS ADDRESS.

I was at that address every working day of that year.

Printouts of eleven emails, sent to an address at a domain I had let lapse in 2020 when we rebranded, four of which have delivery confirmations on them and none of which I ever saw.

And a cheque.

A cashier’s cheque for sixty thousand dollars, drawn on a private bank in New York, dated the twenty-ninth of May, made out to Evelyn Tarrant, uncashed, six years old, soft at the folds.

She had kept an uncashed sixty-thousand-dollar cheque in a tote bag for six years while sleeping on an airport floor.
