She took the Rochester job.
She did not take it — she declined it, in the end, on the Friday afternoon of that first week, by telephone, from my kitchen.
But she took another one three weeks later, at a hotel in downtown Brooklyn, at less money than Rochester, because she was not going to be a woman who stopped working in the week a man reappeared.
For two years she lived four blocks away.
