She got there on her own in four years — front desk in Charlotte to general manager in Brooklyn — and the six years she spent doing it without me are not a gap in her life that I have filled in.
They are her entire professional foundation and the reason she is good at it.
She runs that building the way she ran her own survival, which is to say that she knows what everything costs, she does not believe anybody’s first answer, and the housekeeping staff would walk through a wall for her because she has done the job and they know she has done the job.
