Russell Tannehill slid a folder down the table.

He did it without any particular ceremony, the way you hand somebody a menu.

Inside was a four-page document on the letterhead of Tannehill & Rasmussen, dated the twenty-second of April of that first year, headed Acknowledgment and Voluntary Relinquishment of Parental Rights and Claims.

Pages one to three are dense.

They recite that the undersigned acknowledges a potential paternity claim, disclaims any present or future parental rights in respect of any child of the named party, releases all claims, waives notice of any proceeding, and consents to any adoption or placement.

Page four is a signature page.
