She had seen it on birthday cards and on a lease.
She looked at page four and she recognized my hand, and at that moment everything on pages one to three became true.
She was unrepresented. Thirty-one years old, eleven weeks pregnant with twins she did not yet know were twins, no family in New York, a contract job that ended in July, and no lawyer, because you do not have a lawyer, because ordinary people do not have a lawyer.
And nobody ever told her to check.
