The Island as Its Own Argument

Prince of Wales Island is, by itself, an argument for the maritime capability of the earliest coastal people.

To inhabit an island — to establish a community there, to survive there, to maintain population connectivity with other communities on other islands — requires watercraft.

There is no alternative.

The water between islands does not become land even in winter, even when conditions are at their most favorable.

The fact that human remains as old as Shuká Káa’s have been found on Prince of Wales Island is, therefore, direct evidence for the existence of watercraft and maritime capability at approximately 10,300 years ago on the Southeast Alaskan coast.
