The cave known as On Your Knees Cave is located in the northern part of the island, in an area of karst limestone topography.

Karst is the term for landscapes shaped by the dissolution of soluble rock — primarily limestone and dolomite — by slightly acidic water over geological time.

The result is a landscape of sinkholes, disappearing streams, and caves: passages and chambers carved by water working its way through the rock along joints and faults over thousands or millions of years.

The caves of Prince of Wales Island have been known to the Tlingit and Haida peoples of the region for a very long time.
