The legal map is recent.

The human map is ancient.

The Spirit Cave individual lived in that older geography.

He could not have known the words Nevada, federal land, museum, NAGPRA, or cultural affiliation.

Those categories were imposed thousands of years after his death.

Yet they determined what happened to his body in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

The tribe’s claim effectively asked the federal government to look beneath its own map and recognize a deeper one.

The eventual repatriation did exactly that.

It acknowledged that modern state ownership of land does not erase older Indigenous relationships to place.

That principle is central to many Native heritage disputes today.
