At the beginning of the modern Spirit Cave story, the central question seemed to be: how old is this body?

Radiocarbon dating answered it.

Then the question became: who was this person related to?

Ancient DNA answered much of that.

Then the legal system asked: can a modern tribe establish enough connection for repatriation?

The combination of evidence and persistence eventually answered that too.

But after all those questions were addressed, another emerged.

Why had the burden always been placed on the ancestor and the tribe?

Why did the body need to prove where it belonged rather than the institution prove why it should keep him?

That reversal may be Spirit Cave’s most important legacy.
