Scientists decided what to excavate, what to sample, what to publish, and what to keep.

Modern repatriation and consultation practices increasingly require negotiation.

The result can slow research.

It can also make research more legitimate.

In the Spirit Cave case, the genetic finding gained power precisely because the tribe had permitted the test after years of resisting further study.

The result was not extracted despite the tribe’s objections.

It became part of a negotiated path toward return.

That does not erase the painful history behind the decision.

But it shows that scientific knowledge and tribal sovereignty do not have to be enemies.
