Museum collections are often described in neutral language: storage, conservation, cataloging, research access.

For human remains, those words can hide emotional realities.

A skeleton may be placed in archival boxes, assigned a number, recorded in databases, and stored in climate-controlled conditions.

From an institutional perspective, this protects the material.

From a descendant community’s perspective, the same arrangement may mean an ancestor is separated from the earth and held by strangers.

The ancestor’s physical safety in a museum did not resolve the tribe’s concern.

Preservation is not the same as respect if the community believes burial should be final.
