The Wheelers’ 1940 excavation brought the Spirit Cave burial into scientific awareness.

It did not create the burial, the person, or the cultural world to which he belonged.

The museum preserved the remains.

It did not create the right to possess them forever.

Scientists produced valuable knowledge from the body.

Knowledge does not erase the humanity of the source.

These distinctions seem obvious when stated plainly, yet much of the history of archaeology blurred them.

Collectors often assumed that finding something, excavating it, purchasing it, or receiving it from another institution gave permanent authority over it.

Repatriation law challenged that assumption.

Spirit Cave is a particularly powerful example because the scientific value was genuinely enormous.
