The 11,500-Year-Old Baby Found In Alaska — And The DNA That Revealed A Lost Branch Of The First Americans
The search for pre-Clovis ancient DNA is one of the most active frontiers in early American genomics.
If ancient DNA from a pre-Clovis individual were recovered and analyzed, it would either confirm the founding population model — showing that the White Sands people were genetically related to USR1 and to other early Americans — or it would reveal a different ancestry, suggesting a more complex founding history than the current models allow.
Until that data becomes available, the tension between the genetic models and the archaeological evidence remains an open question.
The USR1 genome is an important piece of the puzzle, but it does not complete the puzzle.
