Some researchers have proposed, based on analysis of modern genomes, that the signal of Ancient Beringian ancestry may be detectable in certain modern populations — particularly in some Indigenous Alaskan communities, where the possibility of a geographic continuity between the Ancient Beringian region and later Athabascan communities has been suggested.
These findings are preliminary and have not been universally accepted, but they raise the possibility that the Ancient Beringian lineage was not entirely replaced or absorbed but may have contributed a genetic component to some populations that persist to the present.
