She was the youngest person imaginable — a newborn, essentially, in her early weeks of life.

She had not yet developed the social and cognitive complexity that we associate with older children and adults.

She was not yet capable of many of the behaviors that would have defined her place in her community.

She had not yet learned to walk or talk or understand the landscape she had been born into.

And yet she was buried.

The community she had been born into recognized her as a member of that community — as someone whose death required acknowledgment, whose passage from life to whatever they understood lay beyond required ceremony and care.
