They descended.

At the bottom of the chamber, more than forty meters below the surface of the water — deeper than the height of a ten-story building — they found the floor of what had once been a pit, an open, air-filled chamber that had existed long before the water came.

And on that floor, among the bones of animals that had fallen into the pit thousands of years ago, they found a human skull.

It was facing upward.

The eye sockets caught their lights.

They named the chamber Hoyo Negro — Black Hole.

And they named the girl whose skeleton they had found on its floor Naia, after the water nymphs of Greek mythology.

She had been there for approximately 12,000 years.

What her bones would eventually reveal — after years of archaeological work, scientific debate, and one of the most difficult and carefully managed excavations ever attempted on an ancient human skeleton — would change what scientists understood about who the first people of the Americas were, where they came from, and why their physical appearance sometimes seemed to scientists not to match the populations that came after them.

The answer was in her DNA.

And the answer was not what some researchers had expected.

To understand what Hoyo Negro is and why it preserved what it did, you have to understand something about the geology of the Yucatán Peninsula — because it is one of the stranger geological environments on Earth, and the chemistry and physics of that environment created the conditions that kept Naia’s bones intact for twelve thousand years.
