The Yucatán Peninsula, where Naia’s bones lay for twelve thousand years, is home today to millions of Maya people — speakers of Yucatec Maya and related languages, descendants of one of the most sophisticated civilizations of the pre-Columbian Americas, members of communities that have maintained their cultural identities through the conquest period, the colonial era, and the modern Mexican state.

They are not an archaeological people.

They are not defined by what ancient DNA analysis can say about their ancestry.
