Buried In Red, Surrounded By Stone

Sometime around 12,600 years ago, in a rock shelter on a hillside in western Montana, someone buried a very young child with more care and deliberateness than almost any other burial from that period in the Americas.

The child was an infant or very young toddler — no more than two years old, possibly considerably younger.

He had been covered in red ochre, the iron-rich mineral pigment that appears in ceremonial and burial contexts across human prehistory in nearly every part of the world.

And he had been laid to rest with a collection of tools so remarkable, so carefully crafted, and so numerous that the people who eventually excavated the site more than twelve thousand years later would spend decades trying to understand what the burial assembly meant.

More than a hundred stone and bone tools surrounded the child.

Many showed no signs of use.

Several were finished to a standard of workmanship that archaeologists would later describe as among the finest examples of their kind ever found — large, thin, beautifully flaked stone points and blades, shaped with a skill that reflected not just functional mastery but something that looks, across twelve thousand years, like intentionality and pride of craft.

The tools were Clovis — the name given to a widespread stone tool tradition found across North America and dated to roughly 13,000 to 12,600 years ago, one of the oldest well-documented technological traditions on the continent.

The Clovis people had, for much of the twentieth century, occupied the center of the debate about who the first Americans were and when they arrived.

Finding a burial associated with Clovis artifacts was already extraordinary.

Finding a child’s burial — with this level of care, this number of artifacts, this evident investment of the community’s material and emotional resources — was unprecedented.

The site sat undiscovered under the Montana hillside for more than twelve thousand years.

When it was found, it changed what scientists thought they knew about the first peoples of the Americas.

But the most important thing the child would reveal — the thing that would eventually put his name in scientific journals around the world and force a genuine reconsideration of long-standing debates — was not visible in 1968 when the burial was first exposed.

It was locked in his bones.

It waited for nearly half a century for the technology that could read it to be invented and refined and applied to material this ancient.

What that technology eventually found, when scientists finally extracted and sequenced the child’s genome, was a result that pointed in a specific and significant direction: this child was most closely related, across all the populations that could be tested, to the Indigenous peoples of the Americas.
