Today, the Anzick property in Wilsall, Montana is private land — the same family that has owned it since the twentieth century, and it was members of that family who were present when the construction workers uncovered the burial in 1968.

The property is not a public park or an archaeological monument.

The burial site was disturbed, studied, and the remains eventually reburied in a process that involved the family, the scientific community, and representatives of Native nations.

The landscape around the site is occupied today by ranches, farms, and small communities of a kind that the child’s people could not have imagined.

But the mountains are still there.
