What Was Found and When

The Anzick site takes its name from the landowners on whose property the discovery was made, Ben and Melvine Anzick.

The property sits in a sandstone outcrop area in the Shields River Valley in Park County, Montana — a landscape of considerable beauty, with the Crazy Mountains visible in the distance and the valley’s river systems reflecting a geography shaped by the same glacial processes that were winding down when the child was buried.

The initial discovery in 1968 was followed by the recovery of the remains and associated artifacts, but the documentation of the original context was imperfect — a consequence of the construction crew’s accidental disturbance and the circumstances of the initial recovery.
