Arlington Springs Man is, as of the current state of archaeological knowledge, among the oldest securely dated adult individuals in North America.

This is a meaningful designation: it reflects a genuine state of the evidence, accurately communicated.

It is not the same as being “the first American” — a claim that the evidence cannot support and that a more ancient find could overturn at any time.

The distinction matters because the history of “oldest” claims in American archaeology is a history of revision.

The Kennewick Man, Spirit Cave Man, Buhl Woman, and Windover population have all been described at various times as exceptionally old or as “among the oldest” in North America, and the specific rankings have shifted as new sites are discovered and as existing sites are redated with improved methods.
