Even at the lowest sea level of the late Pleistocene, Santa Rosa and its neighboring islands formed a single large landmass that researchers now call Santarosae, and Santarosae was still an island.

It had never been connected to the mainland during the time that human beings were on Earth.

Someone had crossed open water to reach it.

That single deduction — that a human being was standing on an offshore California island roughly 13,000 years ago, and that reaching it required a water crossing — became one of the most significant individual data points in the debate over how and when the Americas were first settled.

The bones could not tell Orr the person’s name, language, or exact life story.

They could not directly answer the larger questions they raised.

But their presence in that canyon wall 37 feet below the surface announced something to every researcher who later understood the geology of the site:

Phil Orr And The Museum That Sent Him To The Island

Orr was a scientist of the mid-twentieth century, operating in the era when the scientific professions were less fragmented than they became later, when a single curator at a regional museum of natural history might responsibly study archaeology, paleontology, and the physical geology that underpinned both.

Orr had joined the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History in the late 1930s and spent most of his professional life there.

His interests centered on the California Channel Islands — the archipelago off the southern California coast that consisted, at that time, of eight named islands divided between northern and southern groups.
