The specific cultural identity of the people who hunted mastodons on the Olympic Peninsula nearly fourteen millennia ago is simply not recoverable from the physical evidence that survives.

This is not a failure of science.

It is an honest acknowledgment of what science can and cannot do.

Science can extract extraordinary amounts of information from physical evidence: the age of the bone, the species it came from, the geometry of the penetration, the morphology of the reconstructed weapon, the trajectory of the attack.
