Water is the primary agent of erosion, and on the summit plateau of Roraima it operates almost constantly.

The water that falls on the summit cannot sink into the ground in the way it would in a normal soil environment, because the soils of the summit are extraordinarily thin and the underlying rock is largely impermeable.

The water runs off the surface, flowing toward the cliff edges and pouring over as the waterfalls that are one of Roraima’s most visually dramatic features.
