Some of the endemic or near-endemic birds of the tepui region have calls that have not been widely recorded and are not familiar from field guides designed for lowland birding.

The insects — particularly the black flies (genus Simulium) mentioned earlier — produce a distinctive low buzzing that accompanies any open-air activity on the summit.
